For the past couple of years, we have been following the development and construction of the La Pata/Vista Hermosa Park and Aquatic Center. The 45-acre park, which is located on the fringes of Rancho San Clemente and Talega, is nearing completion and is expected to open by the end of this year. A while back, we posted a blog entitled "Universal Playground Coming To La Pata/Vista Hermosa Park" that detailed the creation of Courtney's SandCastle. Courtney's SandCastle is a universal playground named after Courtney Faye Smith, a local child confined to a wheelchair because she has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a muscular degenerative disease. Because Courtney and handicapped children like her are unable to enjoy the activities at a standard playground, a plan was developed by the San Clemente Parks Foundation, the Junior Woman's Club, and the City of San Clemente to create a universal playground with equipment suitable for disabled children and adults. Originally designed for inclusion at Richard T. Steed Memorial Park, Courtney's SandCastle will now be a section of the La Pata/Vista Hermosa Park.
Since the development of Courtney's SandCastle was announced, efforts have been devised to raise funds for its construction. Everything from tax-free donations to purchasing a personalized tile that will be placed in the playground has been utilized to raise funds, and recently a popular local business decided to get involved. Rainbow Sandals, the popular local sandal-making company that specializes in high-quality leather sandals (I've worn them for over 10 years and would never think of switching to another brand), has designed a special ladie's sandal that will raise funds for Courtney's SandCastle. The sandal is a light pink in honor of Courtney's favorite color that costs $25 a pair, and all proceeds from the sales will go towards the universal playground.
Courtney's SandCastle is an amazing creation and a great addition to the La Pata/Vista Hermosa Park, and it is wonderful to see a local business finding a creative way to support this cause. If you would like information on how to order these special pairs of sandals and support Courtney's SandCastle, please view this informational flyer or visit the Courtney's SandCastle website.
