New San Clemente Park Receives Name And Opening Date
San Clemente City Council Votes On Names of Park and Aquatics Center

One of the most eagerly anticipated projects in San Clemente is finally close to opening. For the past few years, the City of San Clemente and residents have been working tirelessly to build a new sports park on a large piece of vacant land at the corner of Avenida Vista Hermosa and Avenida La Pata, with many factors finally coming together to make this park a reality (including the brand new Target store across the street that helped fund the majority of the project). The brand new Sports Park will feature multiple baseball and soccer fields, a large multi-purpose field, a universal-access playground called Courtney's SandCastle, and a large Aquatics Center with two pools. After the City of San Clemente held an open forum for potential names to the park, it appears they have finally reached a decision.
According to an article in the Orange County Register ("San Clemente names $33 million sports park"), the City Council, by a 3-2 vote on Tuesday night, have named the new park the Vista Hermosa Sports Park; the Council also voted unanimously to name the aquatics center the San Clemente Aquatics Center. The Council also updated the city's rules to reflect the necessary protection of the synthetic turf fields and put in place new rules applicable to all of the parks throughout San Clemente with regards to allowing certain areas in every park to be reserved as rental space. While specific features of the Aquatics Center still have to be finished, the article states that the grand opening of the Vista Hermosa Sports Park is scheduled for Saturday, January 28th at 10:00am.
As we have stated repeatedly in this blog over the past couple of years, the addition of the state-of-the-art Sports Park and Aquatics Center is a fantastic addition to San Clemente. San Clemente is known as an outdoor lover's paradise, and the city's parks reflect the great care that the City of San Clemente places on providing these outdoor havens for children and adults alike. The Vista Hermosa Sports Park will add needed sports fields to the city, while the Aquatics Center will be a welcome addition for residents in this eastern portion of the city who do not feel like making the short trek to one of San Clemente's beautiful beaches. Finally, Courtney's SandCastle provides a wonderful atmosphere for children with disabilities who are unable to take advantage of the play areas afforded other children. This is a major accomplishment for the City of San Clemente, and residents should be proud that this great new project has almost come to fruition.
