More San Clemente Senior Housing May Be Coming

Piece of land at Shorecliffs Golf Club may become a senior housing site

A few days ago, an interesting article was posted in the Orange County Register concerning an 8.6-acre piece of land at the Shorecliffs Golf Club in North San Clemente.  The article, "Senior housing coming to Shorecliffs Golf Club?", concerns the potential development of senior housing on a site that for many years was going to house a new hotel or timeshare resort.  An attorney representing the ownership of Shorecliffs Golf Club, Mark McGuire, brought the matter up for discussion at the City Council meeting last Tuesday evening.  The proposed senior housing units would be built on an 8.6-acre area that is situated in the corner of the golf course near the driving range and clubhouse.  McGuire estimates that there would be around 20 housing units built per acre and that there would only be around 6 acres used so that the parking lot and practice area would not be affected.  As of now, this idea is in the very early stages as the area is currently zoned for timeshare or hotel units; however, because San Clemente's General Plan is currently being revised, the golf course owners have decided to ask for a re-designation so that senior housing could be built in this area instead.

San Clemente offers some of the finest senior living options in Orange County.  From the beach-close Bay Cliff Village and Colony Cove condo developments to the large and luxurious Talega Gallery, seniors have a variety of fine living options at their fingertips in San Clemente.  Building more senior homes at the Shorecliffs Golf Club is a great idea and would further serve to make San Clemente one of the best places to retire in Southern California.  While a new hotel or timeshare resort would be nice, San Clemente has more than enough options for tourists and short-term residents, and the addition of a large hotel or timeshare resort would arguably hurt the burgeoning vacation rental market and the smaller hotel options in the city.  While this project is a long way from coming to fruition, the owners of the Shorecliffs Golf Club have taken a good first step in adding a fantastic new senior development to San Clemente.
